When is the cheapest time to fly?

I can still remember the first day that I booked my first flight. It was a one-way trip to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to visit family. The anticipation of knowing that I will spend at least a weekend on the lovely and beautiful island of Zanzibar, made my booking much more exhilarating. For many, searching & booking for cheap flights might not be so wonderful. This is due to pricey flights of many, or all carriers. Let’s take a look at when is the cheapest time to fly.

Kulula.com offers quite a few tips on getting affordable flights. In general, carriers offers flights at their cheapest on days that they normally struggle to fill seats on their air planes. Then there is also days that people don’t want to fly, and thus you have the luxury of booking some cheap flights in South Africa.

Let’s dig a bit deeper into when the cheapest time is to fly. Keep in mind that if you make use of these tips and information, you will need to be brave as these dates and times generally are not ideal for most people to be on an air plane.

Book flights early in the morning or late at night

Well, if you think about it, most people don’t want to fly very early in the morning or very late at night. The reason being is that you will have to inconvenience a colleague or relative to pick you up in the wee hours of the morning. Flying late at night can also be an inconvenience, as you will also need a colleague or a relative to pick you up very late at night.

The up-side is that the ride to your home or hotel will be smoother and much quicker as the highways and byways won’t have that much traffic late at night or in the early hours of the morning. So plan your flights accordingly so that you won’t be a zombie when you have an important meeting with a client or date with relatives.

Fly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays

These days are normally much cheaper to fly. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are in the middle of the week and also quiet days to fly. Saturdays is the middle of a weekend and who wants to fly when they can spend a Saturday with friends or with family?

These three days are generally very quiet days and the demand to fill seats is high and therefore you will be able to book cheap flights. On the other hand, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays are generally the most expensive as many business travellers want to get home on a Friday evening for the weekend and have to be back at work on Monday morning.

Book your flights early in advance

Most airlines starts selling their lowest flights and as they are booked the next set of tickets are released and will be more pricey than the previous batch. Booking flights over long weekends, holidays, sporting and concert events are definitely more expensive.

So if you are planning on booking a flight to visit friends or family over the holidays or long weekends, going to see your favourite musician or sports team in action, make sure you book flights far in advance.

Check flights to different airports in the same city

It is also advisable that you check flights to the different airports in the same city. A good example is checking flight prices to Lanseria and O.R. Tambo International Airport when flying to Gauteng. Flying to Lanseria is often much cheaper as the airport charges lower airport taxes, thus lowering your flight ticket price. The downside is that you might have to increase your travel time and make use of car rental services.

Loyalty is a great virtue

Airline carriers often offer great flight specials on domestic flights. Therefore it would be highly recommended that you subscribe to Flywise’s Newsletter. This will enable you to get alerts on specials offered by these carriers.

You can also subscribe to all the individual airline carriers in South Africa. The downside is that your mailbox will be cluttered with emails and newsletters from all of these airlines.

Flywise has got different newsletters that you can subscribe to. You can choose to only receive specials or general news, tips and updates to our travel blog. When opting for the “specials” newsletter, you will only receive an alert when an airline carrier has announced a new special.

To conclude

Although most of all of these tips may be a discomfort to your travel plans, making use of them can save you hundreds, even thousands, when booking your next flight. Also keep in mind that flight prices are influenced by demand. Where the demand for flights are at its highest, you can be sure prices will also be at its most expensive.
